John Cook has played tennis for 15 years. He was the track and field coach at George Mason University for 19 years and retired in 1997. He is now a semi-retired 71-year-old and does consulting for Nike. He was once a semi-pro soccer player in Germany, but now he sticks to lifting weights and playing tennis three to four times a week at Longboat Key Public Tennis Center.

What got you into tennis?
(I got involved) when I started to semi-retire. I know how hyper I am; I needed something to do and it’s social. You meet some good amigos playing.

What’s the hardest part about playing?
Trying to stay in shape and fit. It’s hard to keep the feet moving at my age.

What’s your favorite place you’ve ever played and why?
In Barcelona, Spain. I really liked the red-clay courts.

If you could play with anyone in the world, with whom would you play?
Well, I’ve seen (Andy) Roddick work out and I saw him hit with a guy, and I don’t think I’d want to hit with him. Probably Rafael Nadal, from Spain.

What is the breakfast of champions?
My diet could be better. But carbs before I play and a protein shake after I play.

Do you have any other hobbies?
I still work for Nike. I like fast cars. I like lifting weights and working out. I do yoga. I just try to stay fit for an old guy.

If you could have any super power what would it be?
I would be able to move as fast as I could 20 years ago.

What is your biggest pet peeve?
That I can’t lose weight.
