Cops Corner: East County

The following information was gathered from incident and arrest reports obtained from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

LAKEWOOD RANCH
Nov. 13
8:31 p.m. — 14400 block of State Road 70 E. DUI. The driver was stopped for swerving and having a minor vehicle equipment violation. During the encounter with the driver, the responding deputy believed the driver was impaired and requested a traffic unit. The traffic unit arrived and conducted a DUI investigation. The driver was arrested. The driver’s relatives came to the scene to take custody of the vehicle.

Nov. 15
6 p.m. — 8330 block of Lakewood Ranch Boulevard. Neglect of an elderly disabled adult without great harm. Unknown person called the abuse line to report the victim was in the hospital with a urine infection. She had bruises on her rear, left foot and an abrasion on her left leg. The report stated the victim’s daughter was nasty to her and the victim didn’t want to go home with her daughter. At the time of the report, the victim was unable to tell the responding deputy if there was a problem at home. The responding deputy was informed that the infection may be making the victim confused and when she feels better, she may act like a totally different person. The bruise on her rear may be a result of her falling or having been sitting too long. When the nurse tried to walk the victim to her room, she was unsteady and had to be helped.

MYAKKA CITY
Reported Nov. 16
7:30 p.m. — 27400 block of State Road 64 E. Grand theft. Unknown suspect(s) cut the padlock off of the gate and entered the property. The suspect(s) removed several vehicle parts and other various items. The responding deputy also discovered remnants of a bonfire on the property, which was most likely left by the suspect(s). Several bottles and cans were collected and placed into property for processing.

SARASOTA
Nov. 15
9:30 a.m. — 3100 block of Whitfield Avenue. Suspicious incidents. The complainant reported he found a candle burning when he arrived at work today. When the owner and another employee left the night before, the candle was on the front desk and not lit. There were no signs of forced entry. The business has had to release disgruntled employees in the past. The incident was documented.

Reported Nov. 15
8:14 a.m. — 7500 block of 42nd Court E. Fraudulent use of and possession of another’s ID without consent. The complainant reported her identity was used without her authorization. An unknown person used the victim’s Social Security number and name to file a tax return in 2009. The victim was unaware until the IRS contacted her about a questionable refund. The victim said he received the 2009 refund and was unaware the amount she was given was the wrong amount. She cashed and refunded the check, and now the IRS is requesting the amount back from the victim.

OTHER
Reported Nov. 16
8:15 a.m. — 6220 block of State Road 64 E. Vehicle burglary. The complainant reported an unknown person entered his vehicle and stole his laptop computer and luggage. The total estimated value of the theft is $1,200.

SILVER LAKE
Reported Nov. 16
8:12 a.m. — 5000 block of 60th Drive E. Found property. The complainant reported finding keys in the gutter in front of his residence on either Nov. 10 or Nov. 11. He held onto the keys for a few days thinking they might belong to a neighbor. On Nov. 16, the complainant called the sheriff’s office from his place of employment to turn the keys in. The keys had Lee County library card key tags attached, so the responding deputy contacted the Lee County Library Administration Office after an Internet search. The library administration office confirmed the card was active, but wouldn’t divulge the cardholder’s information. The office was provided a case number and the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office’s phone number. The office was going to attempt to contact the owner and advise them of the found property. The keys were placed into property and evidence for safekeeping.
