Mistakes proved to be The Out-of-Door Academy’s downfall, as the host Thunder committed six turnovers and 11 penalties on its way to a 35-15 loss to district rival Evangelical Christian School Sept. 30.

The Sentinels scored on their opening possession on Colby Lynch’s 35-yard touchdown reception.

Evangelical Christian recovered an onside kick on what would’ve been ODA’s ensuing possession. The Sentinels capitalized three plays later when Jordan Phillips caught a 22-yard reception over the middle for a score.

Evangelical Christian responded with its second onside kick of the night, which the Sentinels recovered at the ODA 29-yard line. The Sentinels scored their third touchdown in less than two minutes when Phillips caught a 25-yard reception over the middle for another score, giving Evangelical Christian a 20-0 lead with 7:26 remaining in the first quarter.

The Thunder finally got on the scoreboard with less than a minute remaining in the first half.

After three consecutive touchdown passes were negated due to penalties, ODA tailback Demardre Patterson scored on a 5-yard run, cutting Evangelical Christian’s lead to 20-7.

Evangelical Christian added to its lead with 4:33 remaining in the third quarter following the first of ODA quarterback Evan Wilson’s three interceptions.

Phillips scored his third touchdown of the night on a 43-yard reception to extend Evangelical Christian’s lead to 28-7 following a two-point conversion.

ODA responded on its ensuing possession when Patterson scored from 13 yards out, cutting the Thunder’s deficit to 28-14.

Evangelical Christian scored again to open the fourth quarter to seal the victory for the Sentinels.

ODA returns to action at 6 p.m. Oct. 14 versus Dade Christian School.
