Lakewood Ranch High senior co-captain Kyle Benson shot a 4-under par 68, helping lead the Mustangs to victory in the Donald Ross Memorial Tournament Oct. 3 in Sarasota. Benson, who won two individual championships earlier this season, finished as the tournament’s individual runner-up.
Of the two tournaments you have won, which are you the most proud?
Hammock Beach. It’s a really tough course, and it was really windy because it’s right on the water. I was 1 or 2-under par the entire day, which I was happy about.
How long have you been playing golf?
I started when I was 8 years old and played for two years, but I was big into baseball. I started again seriously the summer before freshman year, because I wanted to make the team. That’s when I got somewhat good.
What’s the biggest strength of your game?
Definitely my putting.
Do you prefer golf or baseball?
Golf. I like that it’s more individual. I can control how I play. I can’t control (how) the team plays in baseball. With golf, I always get to play.
Do you know what you want to be when you grow up?
Something with golf management or maybe a teaching professional.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Costa Rica. Our family always has wanted to visit (that country). We’re all about fishing, and I heard there are amazing golf courses there.
Do you have any siblings?
I have two sisters: Meghan, 22, and Jordan, 20.
Do you look up to a particular golfer?
Luke Donald. He has a really good swing, and he’s always confident on the golf course. He never gets down when he’s playing.
Do you have a favorite movie?
“The Town.” It’s a really interesting movie, and it’s really action-packed.
