East County resident Garrett Lindgren, a retired New York City firefighter who served as a first responder at the World Trade Center on 9/11, shared his searing story at Temple Emanu-El’s Shabbat Service of Remembrance Sept. 9.

The 350 worshippers who heard his firsthand account of devastation, tragedy and heroism rose to their feet in a standing ovation as Lindgren concluded his remarks. On behalf of the congregation, Rabbi Brenner Glickman then presented Lindgren with a check for the New York City Firefighter Brotherhood Foundation, which assists first responders who have suffered injury or illness as a result of their service on 9/11.

Temple Emanu-El’s Shabbat Service of Remembrance also included an original prayer written by Glickman for the 10th anniversary of the attacks, a musical prayer for peace and a recitation of the Kaddish — the Jewish prayer for the dead — to honor the memories of those who perished.
