A fumble late in the fourth quarter set up Bayshore High’s game-winning touchdown as the host Bruins defeated Lakewood Ranch 26-20 in non-district action Sept. 16, marking Bayshore’s first win over a Manatee County foe since 2007.

Trailing 7-0, Lakewood (1-2) quarterback Jeren Kowalewski connected with Connor Lewellen for a touchdown to even the score.

Kowalewski then found Brandon King to give Lakewood a 14-7 advantage heading into the locker room.

Bayshore tied the game to open the second half but the Mustangs responded on their ensuing possession on Kowalewski’s quarterback sneak.

The Bruins scored again with 8:26 remaining in the game, but a missed two-point conversion left Lakewood clinging to a one-point lead.

But Lakewood saw its lead slip away late in the fourth quarter when the Bruins recovered a fumble and later found the end zone with less than two minutes remaining on the clock.

Lakewood’s attempt at a rally fell short when Kowalewski was intercepted in the final seconds.

Lakewood returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 23 when the Mustangs travel to Boca Ciega for their district opener.
