Braden River High School senior Marc Medina won his heat of the 500-meter freestyle during the Pirates’ first swim meet of the season Sept. 14, at the Lakewood Ranch YMCA. Medina also swam the 200 freestyle and the 400 freestyle relay in his first swim meet. Here is an inside look at this week’s Athlete of the Week.

How did it feel to win your heat of the 500 freestyle?
My lap counter miscounted, so I thought I was finished and then I had to do another lap. At that point, I just wanted to get finished.

What made you decide to join the swim team as a senior?
I’ve been athletic all my life. I played football since I was 7 years old, but last year I tore my ACL, MCL and meniscus. I went through the rehab and decided I have to do something because I’ve always been an athletic person, so why not join the swim team?

What do you enjoy the most about swimming?
This is my first year, and I’ve already learned so much in just a couple weeks. It’s challenging, and I like that in a sport.

Do you know what you want to be when you grow up?
Next year, I’ll be attending the University of Texas for engineering.

What was your favorite cartoon show growing up?
“Pokémon.” It was just the thing. I also really liked “Boy Meets World” and “Kenan and Kel.” Those were my shows.

Do you have a favorite food?
Italian food. I’m a big carbohydrates person.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
New Zealand. You can be in many parts of New Zealand and experience entirely different parts of geography.

Do you have a favorite type of music?
Dubstep. It’s a mix between techno energy and new genres.

Do you have any siblings?
I have a brother, Michael, who turned 12 years old Sept. 10.

Are you from Florida originally?
I’m from Texas originally. I moved to Florida when I was 6 years old.
