+ Bayshore Bruins top Lakewood Ranch
A fumble late in the fourth quarter set up Bayshore High’s game-winning touchdown, as the host Bruins defeated Lakewood Ranch 26-20 in non-district action Sept. 16, marking Bayshore’s first win over a Manatee County foe since 2007.

Trailing 7-0, Lakewood (1-2) quarterback Jeren Kowalewski connected with Connor Lewellen for a touchdown to even the score. Kowalewski then found Brandon King to give Lakewood a 14-7 advantage heading into the locker room.

Bayshore tied the game to open the second half, but the Mustangs responded on their ensuing possession on Kowalewski’s quarterback sneak.

The Bruins scored again with 8:26 remaining in the game, but a missed two-point conversion left Lakewood clinging to a one-point lead.

But Lakewood saw its lead slip away late in the fourth quarter, when the Bruins recovered a fumble and later found the end zone with less than two minutes remaining.

Lakewood’s attempt at a rally fell short when Kowalewski was intercepted in the final seconds.

Lakewood returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 23, when the Mustangs travel to Boca Ciega for their district opener.

+ Mustangs win, remain undefeated
The Lakewood Ranch High boys golf team shot a combined 3-over par 291 to top district rivals Riverview (304) and Sarasota (310) Sept. 13 at The Founders Club.

Connor Baldwin shot 71 to earn medalist honors for the Mustangs. Hunter Sagar and Danny Walker each shot 72, and Ramsey Touchberry finished with a 76. David Dill and Ben Boulch both shot 79.

Lakewood followed its district victory with wins over Sarasota, Manatee and Bradenton Christian Sept. 14 at Rosedale Golf & Country Club, improving its record to 26-0.

The Mustangs shot 150 to beat Sarasota (151) by one stroke. Manatee shot 162 and Bradenton Christian finished with a 165. Baldwin earned medalist honors for the second match in a row with a 35. Kyle Benson shot 37 followed by Touchberry and Walker who both shot 39.

+ Tigers roll past banged up Pirates
The Braden River football team struggled to gain momentum against Palmetto, falling to the Tigers 45-3 in non-district action Sept. 16.

The Pirates (0-3) took the opening kickoff and drove down to the Palmetto 20-yard line before backup quarterback Eric Schappacher, who started in place of injured quarterback Steven Ross, was intercepted in the end zone, halting Braden River’s drive.

After a series of punts by both teams, Palmetto (3-0) took a 7-0 lead with 20.9 seconds remaining in the first quarter, when quarterback Trenton Miller connected with Patrick Green for a 13-yard score.

The Tigers extended their lead in the second quarter when Miller connected with Shaquille Harris for a 32-yard strike, giving Palmetto a 14-0 advantage.

Braden River put together a drive of its own on its ensuing possession, when running back Deon Taylor burst up the middle for a 45-yard gain. A 15-yard personal foul penalty by Palmetto placed the ball at the 15-yard line. Four plays later, kicker Michael Unzicher hit a 37-yard field goal, cutting Palmetto’s lead to 14-3.

But that would be as close as the Pirates would come, as the visiting Tigers scored
