Lakewood Ranch junior outside hitter Mariah Robertson recorded 20 kills and a block to lead the host Lady Mustangs past Palmetto Sept. 20, 25-17, 25-18, 25-23 in district action. The 16-year-old followed up her performance with 16 kills, four blocks and two digs in Lakewood’s 3-2 loss to Port Charlotte Sept. 22.

I started playing 8 years ago. My dad used to play, and my older sisters played. It was like family thing, I guess.

What do you enjoy the most about volleyball?
Volleyball has been my life since I was 8 years old. I just love the game itself. I love everything about it.

Do you have any goals for this season?
It’s my junior year, so obviously my goal is to get looked at by colleges. I want to make a name for myself. My goal is to play Division I, so that’s what I’m working (toward).

If you could play another sport for a day, what would it be?
I’d probably run track again, because that’s what I did before.

Do you know what you want to be when you grow up?
An orthopedic surgeon. It goes along with sports medicine and helping athletes get back to where they used to be.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Italy. I’ve always wanted to go because the food is amazing, and I love to cook.

Do you have a signature dish?
Pulled pork. It’s my recipe. I’ve been cooking for as long as I can remember.

Who is your biggest role model?
My dad. He plays volleyball, and he’s always been there cheering me on. He’s the ideal image I have of a father. For as long as I can remember, he’s (encouraged) me to be the best I can and taught me how to live my life and be successful.

Who was your favorite Disney princess?
Ariel, because of the ocean. I grew up out on a boat doing something. It’s always been a part of my life. My first word was “turtle.”
