Sept. 16
Suspension schedule
1:36 p.m. — 6900 block of GMD. Traffic Violation. A driver told police on the above date that he did not believe his license would be suspended until the next day. Police found that the license was actually suspended Sept. 6 for failure to pay a traffic fine. Police confiscated the man’s license and told him to have a licensed driver remove the vehicle.
Sept. 17
Past the expiration date
12:39 a.m. — 100 block of GMD. Traffic Violation. A driver admitted to police that his license “has been expired for a long time.” Police discovered that the license expired in May 2006. The man received a citation and was ordered to appear in Sarasota County court.
Repeat offender
3:50 p.m. — 500 block of Bay Isles Parkway. Trespassing. After a store manager complained that a man had trespassed, police found the man sitting on the curb of a shopping center. Dispatch told police that the same man had trespassed at the same store earlier that day. Police released the man after taking him to the station and gave him a notice to appear in court.
Prep work
9 p.m. — 500 block of Bay Isles Parkway. Suspicious Person. Police noticed two subjects at the rear loading docks of a store. Both subjects told police they were part of a contracted work crew preparing to refinish the interior floors.
Security check
11:34 p.m. — 200 block of GMD. Security Check. Police found that the door of a real-estate office was not secured but could not find the listing for a contact person. A maintenance worker told police that he would arrange for updated contact information.
Sept. 18
Taking a breather
4:18 a.m. — Off the Key. Assist Other Agency. Police went to the Sarasota County Jail to assist a Sarasota officer who needed assistance with breath testing for a DUI suspect.
Sept. 19
On the rum
11:17 p.m. — 7000 block of GMD. Suspicious Circumstance. A man began stretching his arms, kicking his legs outward and stating that he wanted to punch himself in the head after police pulled him over following a report of a reckless driver who was possibly armed with a handgun. The man told police that he was running late for his shift as a hotel security guard, had had a couple of drinks and takes seizure medication. The driver turned out to be armed only with a bottle of Bacardi rum and an empty alcoholic beverage can. A family member agreed to pick up the man and his vehicle.
Sept. 21
Making the cut
5:33 a.m. — 100 block of GMD. Lost or Missing Property. Police found that approximately 72 feet and 5 inches of thick, braided rope was taken from a park. They notified Public Works about the missing town property.
The smell of suspicion
8:06 a.m. — 3200 block of GMD. Suspicious Circumstance. A condominium maintenance supervisor reported that a resident noticed a “suspicious person” who “had a bad odor about him” the week earlier. The supervisor told police that he has noticed items such as toilet paper and air fresheners missing from the pool bathrooms and suspects that a person could be living in the nearby wooded area.
Suspicious sailor
11:51 a.m. — Intersection of Broadway and GMD. Suspicious Person. A man reported a suspicious person walking east on Broadway from Gulf of Mexico Drive. Police stopped a man who met the caller’s description. The suspicious man told police that he was returning to his boat with recently purchased supplies.
Sept. 22
Welfare check
9:08 a.m. — 1000 block of Bogey Lane. Welfare Check. A woman reported that she hadn’t seen her elderly neighbor in several days and noticed several newspapers piled in the driveway. Police entered the home through a sliding door but were unable to locate the resident.
Food fight?
12:08 p.m. — 2500 block of GMD. Domestic Violence. A 20-year-old woman told police that a man dumped eggs and milk on her head while she was holding their baby. The argument arose because the man took the woman’s cigarettes and the woman took the man’s car keys and food-stamp card. The woman told police that the man did not hit her, although a witness reported otherwise. Police observed what appeared to be milk and eggs in the woman’s hair and on the ground below her.
