If you’re looking for a low-steaks comedy, “That’s What She Said,” should be your go-to choice. But this isn’t exactly a first-date film. The humor relates to yeast infections, accidental murder via female sex toy, and as many other outrageous subject matters trying to illicit uncomfortable laughs. It’s a lot over the top.
It follows a misfit group of women. There’s Dede (Anne Heche), a brash, frank, raspy-voiced, chain-smoking, and the most disgusting female one has ever seen – not your typical Anne Heche. Her best friend is overweight Bebe (Marcia DeBonis) who likes to rescue strays. The plot follows BeBe who is preparing to go on her first date with the man that ended her two-year-and-six-month celibacy. And there’s Clementine (Alia Shawkat – Arrested Development fans be glad) a sex-addicted, socially awkward, female just after a breakup who Bebe rescues at a coffee shop.
Feminists beware; this film plays into all the stereotypes that women have fought forever to appeal. There’s bickering, trash-talk, sleeping around, hysterical crying in public and a group of women completely dependent upon men. What this film seems to lack is Sex and the City frank yet independent talk. It goes above and beyond and arguably really makes females look bad.
But that is not to discount those sometimes hilarious-and-not-so-demeaning jokes or scenes take place. It isn’t terrible and will provide some great laughs. Like Heche removing her cigarette temporarily and replacing it to the other side of her toothpaste lined mouth so that the toothbrush can get to the other side of her jaw.
And like ‘Bridesmaids,’ the all-female comedy wouldn’t be complete with out some kind of sappy, chick-flick quality. This film would be best appreciated with a low set of expectations.
