Have I ever mentioned that I’m slightly competitive?
I guess that comes with the territory when you’re a sports writer, but there’s something to be said for the thrill of competition — that feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when you step out onto the field to face-off against your biggest rival.
It’s what motivates you and pushes you to succeed. Every athlete wants to be the best, whether it’s winning a game, setting a record or achieving a personal goal.
And no matter how many years it’s been since you’ve bid farewell to your athletic career, that competitive spirit never truly ceases.
I experienced my first competition when I stepped out onto the field for my first T-ball game when I was 5 years old, and my competitive spirit has only intensified since then.
Whether it’s been winning a district championship, showing up my classmates during March Madness, putting together the perfect Fantasy Football team, watching Ohio State go undefeated and win a national title or securing Boardwalk and Park Place in a rousing game of Monopoly, I’ve always been driven to be the best.
But this past week my competitive spirit reached a new level when I created a professional Facebook page to showcase our local athletes.
I didn’t think much of it at first until I received my very first like from someone other than myself. At that point the race was on. I began setting goals and reaching out to friends and the community for help. There’s no shame in soliciting for likes. Right?
And as I sit here writing this, I can’t help but look at my page and realize I’m only 11 likes away from reaching 100.
So with that being said, I’m asking you to visit my Facebook page at www.facebook.com/JenBlancoObserver and give me your feedback. On any given day, you’ll find updated scores and results, photos and links to stories on YourObserver.com.
I encourage you to share it with your friends and families and leave comments and messages about the players and teams that interest you the most. And in the process you help fuel the competitive spirit of one local sports writer.
