Lakewood Ranch High senior outside hitter Mariah Robertson recorded 23 kills, five aces and 14 assists to help power the Lady Mustangs to victories over Southeast and St. Petersburg Lakewood in the Lakewood Ranch Preseason Tournament Aug. 21 and 22. Here is an inside look at this week’s Athlete of the Week.
What was it like to finally be back out on the court with your teammates?
We put in a lot of hours this summer, so it was nice to finally play teams at a competitive level that weren’t ourselves. It was something we were looking forward to.
What would define success for you this season?
This is my year to make a mark on the school. We have a stronger team then we’ve had in past years, and I think we have a chance of going far. I just want us to give our hearts and get as far as we can while having fun.
What would you say is the biggest strength of your game?
Hitting. I have a drive to play. I don’t quit … I’m one of the shorter players at my position, but I’m going to get the ball over.
Do you know what you want to do when you get older?
I want to be an orthopedic doctor. It’s home to me. I’ve played sports all of my life and I like medicine. It’s the perfect job I could think of.
Do you have any siblings?
I have two sisters, Jessica and Erica, and three brothers, William, Miles and John.
What’s the one iPhone app you can’t live without?
Instagram. It’s better than Facebook. You can see people’s lives and what they are doing. I don’t know why it’s so addicting — it just is.
If you weren’t playing volleyball, what sport would you be playing?
I would probably be running track. I did track as my other sport before I dropped it to continue playing volleyball.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Italy. My aunt goes there a lot and I’ve seen all of her pictures. Everything about it is beautiful. The food, the culture … it’s like one big family. It’s something totally opposite than us.
What’s your favorite food?
Sushi. I love seafood in general.
