Braden River senior Laura Otaiza finished second in the 183-pound weight class of the District 8 State Qualifying Weightlifting Meet Jan. 25, at Port Charlotte High. Otaiza who set personal bests in both the bench press (145 pounds) and clean-and-jerk (130) will now advance to the state meet Feb. 11, at the Kissimmee Civic Center. Here is an inside look at this week’s Athlete of the Week.
What was your reaction when you learned you were moving on to the state meet?
I was nervous because another girl at Lakewood Ranch and I were competing against each other, and we were borderline third and fourth place. When I learned I got second, I had tears in my eyes. It was exciting, because this is what I’ve been working for all year.
How did you get into weightlifting?
Last year, it was a requirement for cheerleaders to do weightlifting, but then our coach said we didn’t have to. I was good at it, and I really liked it. It gave me discipline with my diet, and I just really liked being involved.
Do you prefer the bench press or the clean-and-jerk?
The bench. I think it’s easier for me, and I have more control. In the clean-and-jerk, you have to think about too many things.
Do you play any other sports?
I’ve been a cheerleader since my sophomore year, and this is my second year on varsity.
Do you know what you want to be when you grow up?
An OB/GYN. I’m fascinated with human development. Babies really interest me.
Do you have a favorite subject?
Science. I’m taking two science classes. I was done with science last year, but I just really like science.
Who is your biggest role model?
My mom. She doesn’t baby me. She makes me strive to do the best I can do. She’s definitely a role model for me. She’s a single mom, and it’s not always easy, but she makes it work.
Did you have a favorite cartoon show growing up?
“Winnie the Pooh.” My mom got me this Winnie the Pooh vest and boots, and I wouldn’t take it off.
