A Sarasota motorist veered off a Siesta Key road Thursday afternoon and seriously injured a bicyclist.

Rick Freedman, 70, of Sarasota, was driving south on Higel Avenue when the Florida Highway Patrol explained he suffered a medical condition causing him to blackout. He veered into the bicycle lane before hitting the bicyclist, a mailbox and a wall.

The bicyclist, Benjamin Stoltzfus, 20 of Pennsylvania, was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital after being hit at Higel Avenue and Little Pond Lane. Freedman sustained minor injuries.
