Thirteen-year-old shortstop Kinsey Goelz hit a grand slam, her first over-the-fence home run, to help lead the Suncoast Storm 14U travel softball team to a third-place finish at the ISA World Series in Crossville, Tenn. The Nolan Middle School eighth-grader batted .714 with six RBIs in the tournament, which was shortened due to rain, and was named to the All-World tournament team.
What was your reaction when you hit your first grand slam?
It was really awesome. The best part was when I came home and everyone on my team had a smile on her face.
How did you get into softball?
I’ve been playing since I was 6 years old. I believe I saw it on TV one time, and then I got my first glove when I was 6 years old.
What do you enjoy most about softball?
I like how it’s like life. You learn lessons, and if you don’t get better and practice, then you aren’t going to get good at anything.
What do you enjoy the most about your position?
I like having all of the pressure.
Do you have any siblings?
I have a sister, Avery, who is 10 years old.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Italy. I heard it’s really pretty there, and they have really good spaghetti.
Do you play any other sports?
I play soccer for the Braden River Rage.
Of the two sports that you play, which is your favorite?
Softball. I like it because I was more passionate about wanting to get better at that sport.
Who is your biggest role model?
My mom and dad. They always give me good advice about doing the right stuff and not doing wrong.
Did you have a favorite cartoon show growing up?
“Scooby Doo.” It was funny.
If you could play another sport for a day, what would it be?
Volleyball. I like playing outside with my team.
