Comment: To golf or not to golf?

After having spent a weekend chasing Tiger Woods around The Players Championship last month, my husband casually mentioned the other day about wanting to take up golf.

Of course, this isn’t the first time he has mentioned the idea, but this time around it actually got me thinking.
Are the matching outfits really worth standing out in the blazing Florida sun for hours on end while I attempt to make it through nine holes?

I, for one, have never been golfing. I went to the driving range once, and let’s just say that turned into more of hysterical theatrics on the part of my best friend and me — much to the dismay of her future husband — as chunks of the range flew off in different directions.

But, as is typical in Florida, I now find myself spending a lot of time out on the golf course, and this past week proved to be no different as I covered the American Junior Golf Association Rolex Girls Junior Championship at The Concession Golf Club.

Seventy-two of the world’s elite junior golfers — girls half my age — teed off on what has been described as one of the most challenging courses in the country. Although, apparently, someone forgot to tell that to the defending champion who fired off a record-breaking 18-under par 270.

I didn’t get to see her tee off, but watching the other girls fire off shots and sink putts only reminded me of one of the main reasons why I have yet to pick up a golf club —the fear of having a line of golf carts form behind me as I struggle to tee off.

I’ve been known to barely make par when I’ve played putt-putt in the past, but I think after a few practice rounds I could get the hang of it.

Of course, there’s still the blazing heat and the throngs of disgruntled golfers who are sure to be waiting in my wings; but perhaps one of these days, when my son is a little older, the Blanco family will make its first appearance out on the course.
