The digital speed limit signs along the stretch of Beach Road skirting the main entrance to Siesta Key Beach were blank this weekend as cars lurched slowly through flooded streets.
Collateral rain bands from Tropical Storm Debby pelted Siesta this weekend with heavy rain causing flooding on Beach Road and Canal Road that was knee-high at some points. The deepest point is currently between the intersection of Midnight Pass Road and Beach Way where Sarasota County has placed two “Road Under Water Signs,” one of which has blown over in the high winds.
There is also deep water slowing traffic at the corner of Beach Road and Calle Del Invierno and at several points along Canal Road. Light traffic on Canal Road has allowed easier navigation of the wet streets, so residents may want to take that route as an alternative to Beach Road.
The surf on Siesta Beach has passed the lifeguard stands nearly reaching the volleyball courts, as well.
