What started six years ago as an arts and crafts exhibit has evolved into SpringFest, which will return to Palmer Ranch Saturday, March 24. The day begins at 7:30 a.m., with a 5K and 12K road race through the Palmer Ranch neighborhoods and Legacy Trail.
“It’s evolved and been fine-tuned,” said event coordinator Karen Russell. “Now, there are tons of different expos showcasing the different businesses within Sarasota. The race really beefed up last year — we’re expecting 800 runners to participate.”
The festivities continue until 4 p.m., with no shortage of family-friendly activities. Attendees can hear live bands play music throughout the day, see martial-arts demonstrations, hunt for eggs, enjoy food from food trucks and the Phillippi Estates Farmers Market, participate in a family fitness challenge and much more.
“It’s like a big block party,” Russell said. “We’ve pulled together all these different facets of the community.”
With dozens of sponsors, there will be plenty of drawings and prizes available, including a free six-month membership to the YMCA and a free weekend luxury car rental from Mercedes-Benz.
“It’s amazing how people have stepped up this year for sponsorships and prizes,” Russell said. “A lot of people have come on board.”
Admission to the event and parking are free, and SpringFest benefits the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office’s PAL program, which aims to create a safe environment for children and help them develop relationships with other youth, adults and law enforcement.
