Harmless algae surfaces along Key shore

→ The gunk-like substance is no cause for alarm---it is the result of warm weather and moves with the tide and wind.

If you were out for a stroll along Longboat Key’s Gulf beaches over the weekend, you may have been alarmed by patches of brown gunk on the sand.

According to residents who emailed the Longboat Observer, it wasn’t pleasant to look at---or smell.

But the good news is, it isn’t related to red tide or the BP oil spill, nor is it the result of a boater dumping sewage into the water.

Sylint focusing on computer security

→ Sylint Group President John Jorgensen believes his company must focus on upgrading the city’s computer security system.

The Sarasota City Commission was told at its regular meeting Monday that nothing is more important than upgrading City Hall’s computer security network so it’s not vulnerable to hacking attacks.

While Sarasota-based Sylint Group is still working on upgrading the city’s shoddy e-mail server system, Sylint President John Jorgensen said security is key.

“We suggest we extend our efforts in ensuring that the city has proper cyber security in place,” Jorgensen said.

Village lot gets chance at new paint

→ The municipal lot behind Siesta Market in the Village, which is maintained by Sarasota County, will be included in a $500,000 omnibus transportation bill that will be voted on this summer.

A presentation by members of Public Works Sarasota County for the board of commissioners on May 7 brought some news about the progress maintaining Siesta Village.
