The Florida Department of Transportation is using the Internet, the U.S. Postal Service and old-fashioned legwork to keep Siesta Key residents and businesses informed about the upcoming renovation of the North Bridge.

The agency established a website (siestakeybridge.com) that has safety tips for motorists traversing the construction site and frequently asked questions. In addition, FDOT representatives distributed flyers to Siesta Key merchants on-foot and through the mail. A public meeting is scheduled for May 22; a department spokeswoman said residents are encouraged to attend.

The effort is in part to squash misconceptions about the project, explained Siesta Key Association President Catherine Luckner at a Thursday, May 3 meeting of her organization. For example, contrary to some rumors, the FDOT expects to close one lane — which will not restrict all access — on the bridge from 9 p.m. until 7 a.m. from June 5 until Oct. 16.

At the same meeting, Luckner discussed traffic concerns South Siesta Key residents have about the project. Although the North Bridge will not be closed off completely, Luckner said there were worries about vehicles being rerouted to the South Bridge to avoid congestion. This and other topics will be discussed at the next SKA meeting Thursday, June 7.

FDOT representatives will give a presentation and answer questions.

FDOT will host an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 22 to discuss any updates to the renovation plans and address any concerns. It will be held at the Siesta Key Chapel located at 4615 Gleason Ave.
