** UPDATE:  The Special meeting has been changed to June 6, 2012 at 3:00pm in the Commission Chambers. **With the upcoming Sarasota City Commission meeting to discuss a ban of public events in Five Points Park, it's more important than ever that Sarasota residents get involved in the dialogue. We here at This Week in Sarasota will be represented, along with (we hope) hundreds of other Sarasotans who want to see our city thrive. However, we've picked up on many expressions of regret at not being able to be present at the meeting at 3 p.m. this Thursday.

So for those of you who'll be at work, out of town or otherwise unable to show support for public events in public spaces with your physical presence, TWIS made you a petition. We've already received more than 80% of our goal of 500 signatures, but we want to bring as many votes as we can in support of events such as the Harvey Milk Festival and EcoFest to the Sarasota City Commission on Thursday.

As TWIS Founder Matt Orr writes, "Five Points Park was designed to be the central focus for activity in downtown Sarasota. As members of the Sarasota community, we want to see live music and streets filled with activity. We want our neighborhood businesses to survive with foot traffic that events and live music bring. We do not want a city that ends urban core entertainment before midnight."

TWIS knows so many of you feel the same way. Now it's your turn to express it. Just click. Sign. And share.
