Athlete of the Week: Cody Staton

Twelve-year-old quarterback Cody Staton threw five touchdown passes and connected for three two-point conversions to lead the East Manatee Bulldogs Navy Wildcat team to a 22-16 victory over the Storm and a 16-6 victory over the Southeast Tampa Seminoles to win the FYD South Conference Championship May 12. Here is an inside look at this week’s Athlete of the Week.

What does it mean to you to have helped lead your team to a conference championship?
It felt pretty good. I thought I played well, and I delivered my passes on target where they needed to be.

How long have you been playing football?
Since I was in the third grade. I wanted to try something new.

What do you enjoy the most about football?
Playing quarterback. It’s what my dad played in high school, and it’s fun.

What’s the toughest part about being a quarterback?
Reading the field and throwing to the right receiver.

Do you have a favorite football team?
The Michigan State Spartans. That’s where my parents went to college, and I’ve been watching them play for a couple years.

Do you have any siblings?
I have a brother Zak, 15, and a sister Kylie, 9.

If you could play another sport for a day, what would it be?
Ice hockey. It would be fun to hit people.

Did you have a favorite cartoon show growing up?
“Scooby Doo.” He’s a talking dog.

Who is your biggest role model?
Drew Brees. He’s a talented athlete; and he’s not a big jerk to everybody.

If you could play another position, what would it be?
Wide receiver. I would want to see how many touchdowns I can score.

What’s your favorite amusement park ride?
Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point. It goes really fast.

If you could have one super power, what would it be?
To fly, so I could be like a bird.

What’s your favorite food?
Steak.
