Back-up plan
11:32 a.m. — 5300 block of GMD. Public Service. A man told police that someone backed into and knocked over his motorcycle and said that the culprit was possibly the driver of a service truck that had been parked in back of a restaurant. A restaurant employee spoke to the driver, who said that he was unaware he had hit anything but agreed to return and talk to the man.

Taking out the ‘guest’ work
1:25 p.m. — 4700 block of GMD. Suspicious Person. Police searched for a burglary suspect with Sarasota officers and found a man who matched the suspect’s description in front of a resort. Hotel staff confirmed that the man was a registered guest.

Need for restraint
8:18 p.m. — 7100 block of La Lenaire Drive. Assist Other Agency. The Coast Guard transported a man who fell off a Jet Ski to a boat ramp, where he began swinging at fire personnel while on a stretcher. The man wasn’t under arrest, but police handcuffed him until paramedics put arm restraints in place.

Open-door policy
8:03 a.m. — 500 block of Bay Isles Parkway. Suspicious Circumstance. A man told police he locked the gate of a construction site the night before but returned to find a gate open and the chain lying on the ground with the top gate hinge disconnected. He was unsure whether the wind blew the gate open or if someone had opened it and entered the site.

Time to call it a night
10 p.m. — 5600 block of GMD. Domestic Disturbance. A couple was vacationing in the area, had dinner and got into an argument. Police stopped after noticing that both the man and woman were having trouble walking. The woman appeared to be extremely intoxicated and held onto the front bumper of the police car before falling onto the sidewalk and scraping her knee. Police drove the couple back to their hotel. The woman said she would go to sleep.

Wire fire
7:29 p.m. — 4900 block of GMD. Fire. Police assisted firefighters with keeping pedestrian traffic away from the area surrounding a small transformer fire until FPL workers arrived and disconnected the arcing wire.

Dog-free zone
5:01 p.m. — 4700 block of GMD. Dog on the Beach. A woman who had a small dog on the beach voluntarily left after police explained the town ordinance that prohibits dogs on the beach.

May 14
Where’s the fire?
10:35 a.m. — 600 block of Cedars Court. Fire/Gas Leak. Café employees reported a natural-gas smell but neither police nor firefighters detected an odor. Employees said that a pilot light had been out earlier, possibly causing the smell to drift up to the pro shop in the same building.

Trespassing trio
10:55 a.m. — 100 block of North Shore Road. Dog on the Beach. A condominium manager told police that a man and woman were trespassing through the property with a dog. Police found the man and woman hiding next to a unit. The woman admitted that they frequently cut through the property. Police issued the man and woman written warnings for having the dog on the beach. The property manager gave them verbal trespass warnings.

Boater’s bounty
11:07 p.m. — Linley Street. Property Found. Police found a camouflage buck knife and red vessel gas tank at a boat ramp and waited for a few minutes to see if the owner would return for the items before taking them to the police station.

10:40 a.m. — 5500 block of GMD. Property Found. A Public Works employee found a gold women’s ring with a stone in a park.

Dog warning
1 p.m. — 100 block of North Shore Road. Dog on the Beach. Police issued written warnings to two women walking on the beach with a dog.

Sense of time
12:23 p.m. — 600 block of Ranger Lane. Parking Violation. Police left a business card at a home where, according to neighbors, a motor home had been parked overnight. Police planned to contact the owner to tell her that town ordinances prohibit the parking of motor homes on streets for more than nine hours within a 24-hour period.
