Athlete of the Week: Sean Kirsche

The Out-of-Door Academy football team’s senior kicker Sean Kirshe hit a 27-yard field goal in overtime to propel the Thunder to a 40-37 come-from-behind victory over Class 2A-District 6 rival Evangelical Christian Sept. 28. Kirshe, who turns 18 years old Oct. 4, also hit a 27-yard field goal in the first quarter.

What was going through your mind as you prepared for your field goal in overtime?
“Don’t miss — just don’t miss.”

What was your reaction when you made the field goal?
I was thrilled because I finally got the overtime kick that I wanted.

Do you like situations where the game is riding on you?
Yes. It’s not that I (necessarily) like it, but it’s just something I have to deal with. I don’t have a choice.

How long have you been playing football?
I’ve been playing since last fall. I basically came out and the coach said, “Go kick the ball.” It went in and he said, “OK, you’re the new PAT kicker.”

If you weren’t a kicker, which position would you want to play?
Running back or quarterback. Those are the two positions that get the most (notoriety) and play the most.

Do you know what you want to be when you grow up?
I want a career in the military.

Do you have any siblings?
I have a brother, Brian, who is the punter.

Who is your biggest role model?
Adam Vinatieri. He was able to kick the game-winning field goal in the Super Bowl. It was just incredible with all of that pressure.

What is your fondest football moment?
When I kicked my 50-yard field goal. It was my first field goal of the season.

What was your favorite cartoon show growing up?
“Sponge Bob.” I just loved it.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Somewhere in Europe. I’ve been to France once for soccer, and I loved it, so I would like to check out other parts of Europe.

If you could play another sport for a day besides football or soccer, what would it be?
Baseball.
