Cops Corner: East County

The following information was gathered from incident and arrest reports obtained from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. 

Sept. 26
Riding shotgun
9:09 a.m. — 14400 block of Circle 39. Improper Exhibition of a Fire Arm. A man became agitated when his truck got stuck for the second time in a dump facility and flashed his semiautomatic pistol to an employee before leaving the scene. The employee declined to prosecute.

Sept. 28
Don’t look twice
12:21 p.m. — West Country Club Drive North and Oak Run Drive. Suspicious Incidents. A woman reported that a truck drove by her twice, which made her nervous.

Guilty until proven ...
4:30 p.m. — 8400 block of Lockwood Ridge Road. Petit Theft. A woman ate at a fast food restaurant and realized that she left her purse there after her husband called her cell phone and the restaurant manager answered it. The couple returned to the restaurant and found $102 missing. The man and woman insisted that the manager took the money because he “has a guilty face and attitude.” The manager denied taking anything from the purse.

Not-so-lucky ticket
5:07 p.m. — 5700 block of Garden Lakes Drive. Obtaining Property Over $20,000. A man reported that an individual contacted him over the phone, told him that he won a large sum of money and instructed him to overnight a smaller sum to Maryland in order to receive the larger cash prize. The man continued to send money, totaling $24,000, until his daughter informed him that he was being scammed.

SEPT. 29
TEMPERS BOIL OVER
8:59 p.m. — 800 block of Kay Road. Domestic Disturbance. A woman argued with her boyfriend of five years after becoming angry because he accidentally left the stove on. The woman agreed to drive her boyfriend home.

Oct. 1
Stolen sundial
1:48 p.m. — 6400 block of Westward Place. Petit Theft From Building. A man reported that a brass sundial was taken from his yard that had the engraving: “Grow old along with me, the rest is yet to be.”

Oct. 2
Golf tip
9:05 a.m. — 8000 block of Glenbrooke Lane. Suspicious Incidents. A man reported that his son, who is in jail, told him that a set of golf clubs in their garage was stolen by another person. Deputies took possession of the clubs.

Change of address
11:02 a.m. — 5200 block of 32nd St. E. Information Only. A woman came to the sheriff’s office to report that a neighbor two houses down has been getting her mail but has been giving it her. The woman believed that someone has been going around to all of her accounts and fraudulently changing her address to the neighbor’s address. Deputies wrote that the woman had an extreme amount of paperwork that was difficult to understand but was unable to produce a statement or letter indicating that she had been a fraud victim.

Changing direction
5:22 p.m. — 4500 block of Fourth Ave. N.E. Assist. A man who was reportedly pulling a vehicle by hand told deputies he was a victim of a hit-and-run, then changed his story and said he lost control of the vehicle and hit a median when state troopers arrived at the scene. The man had previously been reported missing and was said to be endangered because of mental illness. He was released to his father-in-law.

Oct. 3
Green scheme
6:07 a.m. — 7100 block of Grand Estuary Trail. Criminal Mischief/Property Damage. A maintenance worker discovered approximately $900 worth of damage to the greens of a golf course caused by an unknown person driving a vehicle through the course overnight. He turned over to deputies a koozie and bottle of body spray that he found near tire nuts on the greens.

Dust up
8:53 p.m. — 6100 block of Exchange Way. Burglary of an Unoccupied Dwelling. An unknown person entered a motel room and stole an iPad and bottle of blood pressure pills. The victim refused to allow deputies to process prints because he didn’t want to get finger print dust on his clothes.

Text alert
9:35 a.m. — 23700 block of 53rd Ave. E. Simple Stalking. A woman reported that a person has been texting her harassing messages even after she told the texter to stop texting. Some of the messages indicated that the texter was on the woman’s property.

Oct. 4
Special delivery
3:22 p.m. — 4600 block of 18th St. E. Seized Narcotics. Deputies got a search warrant for a package after a K-9 unit responded to its odors and discovered 11.7 grams of marijuana.
