Cops Corner: East County

The following information was gathered from incident and arrest reports obtained from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. 

Oct. 2
Family plot
8:52 p.m. — 8100 block of Lakewood Main St. Baker Act. A woman who refuses to take her medication said that she believes her family is trying to turn her into a prostitute and kill her.

Oct. 7
That’s the liquor talking
2:11 p.m. — 700 block of Greyhawk Blvd. Threat To Do Violence. A male who looked about 18 years old was drinking liquor from a plastic bottle at a condominium pool. He argued with a man who asked him to put the bottle away and remove his backpack from the pool area. The 18-year-old threatened to kill the man if he touched his backpack and got in the man’s face. He also said, “Nice truck, you better hope it stays that way,” before leaving in a car.

Oct. 11
Shady suspect
5:08 a.m. — 75th Drive East and Tuttle Avenue. Suspicious Incidents. A woman who drives a paper route each morning reported that she has been followed by a man who drives with his high-beam lights on and wears a baseball cap.

Quit bugging me
9:13 p.m. — 10400 block of Old Grove Circle. Threat To Do Violence. A man threatened to beat up a county mosquito control employee if he didn’t stop spraying.

Oct. 12
Not so neighborly
11:32 a.m. — 5300 block of 53rd Ave. E. Criminal Mischief. An unknown person poured what appeared to be Roundup in a man’s yard in a mobile-home community and caused approximately $100 in damage. Deputies learned that there has recently been dissention in the community.

Oct. 13
Message received
10:26 a.m. — 3200 block of 54th Drive E. Battery. A man heard text alerts on his wife’s phone while eating breakfast, looked at the messages and learned that his wife was having an affair. They got in an argument, and the woman picked up a plastic vacuum tube and hit her husband with it while trying to grab the phone from him. The woman had left the home by the time deputies arrived.

Oct. 15
Make it a double
1:01 a.m. — 6300 block of S.R. 64 E. Trespass Warning. A gas-station employee caught a homeless man trying to steal beer twice during the same evening.

Oct. 16
Campaign strategy
6:47 p.m. — 3300 block of Morgan Johnson Road. Petit/Grand Theft. A woman reported that two Mitt Romney/Paul Ryan signs, one Jim Boyd sign and one Connie Mack sign were taken from her yard. She also reported two banners were stolen, including one that read, “These tyrants agree gun control works: Stalin, Hitler, Obama” and another that listed gas prices and read “Vote for Mitt.”

Oct. 17
Not what she was aiming for
9:39 a.m. — 14000 block of Sugar Bowl Road. Information Only. A woman fired her rifle toward a pit bull that had been aggressive toward her pit bull and hit the dog in the shoulder. The woman said she didn’t mean to hit the dog but wanted to scare it away for safety reasons. The dog’s injuries didn’t appear to be life-threatening. Animal services took custody of the injured pit bull and a hound dog that had also been coming onto the property. Deputies were unable to locate the dogs’ owner.

No violation
10:37 a.m. — 5500 block of S.R. 64 E. Information Only. A woman filed a petition for violation of an injunction for repeat violence against another woman after seeing her at a gas station. The woman who had the injunction filed against her didn’t get out of her vehicle until the other woman left. Deputies determined that she didn’t violate the injunction.

Ditched vehicle
5:20 p.m. — 3100 block of 42nd St. E. Abandoned Autos. A caller reported that a possibly intoxicated woman was lying in a ditch next to her car after a single-vehicle crash. Deputies found the vehicle abandoned and were unable to locate the registered owner.

Oct. 18
Fly-by operation
10:20 a.m. — 4700 block of Starboard Drive. Information Only. A woman came to the sheriff’s office to report that another law-enforcement agency’s aviation unit is following her.

Oct. 19
School stash
2:32 p.m. — 9400 block of State Road 64 East. Possession of Cannabis. The defendant had possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana. Someone at the school received information from a student that the defendant had the marijuana in his front pocket. The defendant had shown the student the marijuana when asked about it. The small green leafy substance tested positive for marijuana and weighed 1 gram. The defendant allegedly bought the marijuana the same day he was caught in possession of it, while at school.

Oct. 21
Nuisance neighbors
7:19 p.m. — 8100 block of Glenbrooke Place. Information Only. The subject reported his neighbor had her dogs out off leash. Two of the dogs came into his yard and he asked her to come get them. The neighbor came into his yard and told him that if he called Animal Control again about her dogs, she would “get him.” The subject stated the neighbor was yelling and in his face, but was not making threatening gestures, nor did he fear for his safety. The subject said it was an ongoing problem and he has reported it to Animal Control previously. The neighbor was issued a warning. Although the incident did not appear to be a criminal act, the subject requested to have the incident documented.
