+ Broken pipeline prompts boil-water warning
Sarasota County Oct. 22 lifted the boil-water advisory for approximately 2,600 Siesta Key residents affected by a broken water main on the south end of the island.
The county reported the break Oct. 18, and staff repaired the connection the same day, according to a news release. But, state law requires municipalities, or other drinking-water providers, to issue the advisory even if they don’t suspect contamination.
Sarasota County this summer contracted Arrow Directional Boring Inc. to replace the water main connection between Siesta and Casey Key to improve flow and reliability, which staff expected to be completed this month.
+ SCAT puts shelters out for bid again
Sarasota County issued a new solicitation of bids for a contractor to install 23 new bus shelters and 18 solar arrays at Sarasota County Area Transit bus stops throughout the county, according to the county’s online procurement system.
More than 14 firms downloaded the plans, which require the winning bidder to submit weekly payroll documentation to comply with wage regulations set by the Davis-Bacon Act.
SCAT shelter replacement by the numbers:
• 23 bus shelters
• 36 bicycle racks
• 18 benches
• 18 solar lighting kits
+ Waechter reappointed to zoning board
The Santa Claus cap Siesta Key Association board member Bob Waechter dons during the Light up the Village Parade is just one of the hats the island resident puts on during civic engagement.
Although his three-year term on the Sarasota County Board of Zoning Appeals recently ended, the County Commission Oct. 23 re-appointed Waechter to the board. Waechter also sits on the Tourist Development Council.
The board’s purpose is to hear appeals about the interpretation or administration of zoning regulations or variances, and it meets six times annually.
