After erosion has continued to tear away northern portions of Beach Road from nearby properties, a recently repaired section of asphalt and part of a driveway collapsed last night. The collapse prompted Sarasota County to block access to at least two properties.

Jean Furlong, who manages some of those properties, sent an email to Sarasota County Commissioner Nora Patterson this morning asking for help with the situation. She expects tenants in one of the buildings to arrive late tonight and has landscapers pushing greenery further from the waterline to make the properties more accessible.

The county called in Frederick Derr and Co., a local construction firm, to assess the damage and prepare an estimate for future repairs, said Sarasota County General Manager of Business Operations Tom Maroney.
County staff met at 1:30 p.m. today to discuss the plan.

“We’re probably going to get a little aggressive with it at this point,” Maroney said.
