Lakewood Ranch High sophomore Spencer Schultz shot a 1-under 35, earning individual medalists honors for the second time in a row and helping lead the Mustangs' golf team to victories over Bradenton Christian, Sarasota Christian and Braden River Sept. 4.
Why do you think you’ve seen so much success early on this season?
Probably because I practiced more over the summer. Last year, I wasn’t in the starting five. I want to do well this year —be a part of the team and show them that I can help the team win.
How long have you been playing golf?
I’ve been playing in tournaments since I was 12 years old. My dad played high school and Division I golf. He’s like my coach. He helps me out.
What do you enjoy the most about golf?
Just playing the game. It’s a lot of fun playing the different golf courses. Each course is different, and each one has its own unique characteristics.
What’s the one area of your game you think you need to improve on the most?
Chipping. Last year that was my main weakness. It didn’t really help me out that much.
What’s your fondest golf moment?
The day I remember picking up a club and swinging it. I was 4 years old. That day started my future career in golf.
Who is your biggest role model?
Ernie Els. He’s a great professional golfer. He’s won four majors. His son also was diagnosed with autism, and he donates a lot of charity money for research. He’s a really good guy.
Do you have any siblings?
I have two younger brothers, Harrison, 11, and William, 3.
Do you know what you want to be when you grow up?
Something golf-related — either a professional golfer or a golf (course) architect.
What’s your favorite subject?
History. It’s the history of the world. I find it really interesting. The different wars and stuff and all of the politicians — it’s pretty cool.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Dubai. I want to see the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. There’s so much architecture and all of the different buildings, I just think it would be really cool.
What’s your favorite food?
Filet mignon
