+ Golden Apple Dinner Theatre receives eviction notice
On Monday, Sept. 10, the Golden Apple Dinner Theatre received an eviction notice from its landlord, Toronto-based commercial real-estate company Great Lakes Development Co.

At 11:10 a.m. Monday, the sheriff’s notice was affixed to the doors of the theater, at 25 N. Pineapple Ave. The notice stated that the eviction had been completed and the locks had been changed.

“All of this has come on so quickly that we have not had a moment to think about the (upcoming) season,” Kyle Turoff, artistic director of PLATO, said in an email Monday. “(We’ve focused) more about moving the 41 years of stuff out of a building in what could be only 48 hours.”

The notice stated the theater must contact the landlord for the removal of personal property including kitchen equipment, tables and chairs, office documents and costumes and props.

Great Lakes Development bought the property from the Golden Apple in 2011. Later that same year, PLATO launched as a non-profit theater production company that would perform at the Golden Apple and help pay the monthly rent.

Currently, the theater owes about $45,000 to Great Lakes.

But, the Turoff family isn’t giving up hope on keeping open the theater, which has provided 41 years of dinner-theater productions to Sarasota.

“We hope to find a space to continue, but, at the moment, (we’re) trying to organize,” Turoff said. “I have classes on the books I have had to cancel, with more to come.”

+ International exhibitor comes to Sarasota Museum of Modern Art
I’m looking forward to the day Sarasota Museum of Modern Art, a Division of Ringling College of Art and Design (SMOA), officially opens in the historic Sarasota High School building.

When I drive past the site’s banner with a glass more than halfway full that signifies funds raised, it reminds me that I can’t wait for the contemporary art they will eventually have there.

Jan. 7, as part of SMOA’s 2013 “Art Muse” program, international artist Patrick Dougherty will build an installation on the grounds. Dougherty’s environmental work turns truckloads of saplings, twigs and other typical campfire-makings into works of imaginative art using primitive building techniques.

“This is a remarkable opportunity for our community,” says Wendy G. Surkis, president of Sarasota Museum of Art/SMOA in a press release. “ … We’re thrilled that he is coming here for SMOA. It’s an example of the fresh ideas SMOA will be bringing to Sarasota.”

“SMOA Inaugural Bash” will not only provide an opportunity to meet the artist, but it will be the first event for SMOA’s 2013 “ARTmuse” program.

+ Carreño tours Havana
If you enjoyed the Carreño Dance Festival — and fancy a vacation to Havana — then now’s your chance. From Nov. 1 to Nov. 8, the Carreño Dance Festival will lead a tour to Cuba so that visitors can take in Cuba’s traditions in dance, music and visual arts during the 23rd International Ballet Festival of Havana.

The International Ballet Festival of Havana takes place every other year and brings top dancers, such as Sarasota’s own José Manuel Carreño, to perform.

Carreño will perform a flamenco-based “Blood Wedding” at the festival, but attendees can expect classical ballets including “Swan Lake,” “Coppelia” and “Giselle,” which the Ballet Nacional de Cuba will perform.

+ ‘The Daily Show’ writer hopes to garner some laughs
The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee will feature the 11 Emmy Award-winning writer David Javerbaum, head writer of “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” at 7 p.m. Oct. 24, at The Jewish Federation of Sarastoa-Manatee’s Beatrice Friedman Theater, 582 McIntosh Road.

Javerbaum will discuss his 2011 book, “The Last Testament: A Memoir by God,” in which God gives a personal account of and look at contemporary society, ranging from topics such as abortion to Broadway musicals.

‘Chrch!!!’: This four-band concert is presented by Art Center Sarasota and The Closet. Three local bands will be featured: Fancy Rat, O’Captain and Kyle Kern; Roadkill Ghost Choir is the fourth band and hails from Deland.
