After allowing a pair of touchdowns in less than a minute, the Lakewood Ranch High defense sacked Bayshore quarterback Wesley Jackson for a 12-yard loss on fourth down to preserve a 21-14 overtime victory over the Bruins.
The Mustangs took a 6-0 lead in the second quarter when quarterback Chad Rex connected with Ty McLeod for a 14-yard touchdown.
Lakewood extended its lead in the third quarter on a 4-yard touchdown run by Chris Pearcey. Rex connected with Cameron Pearcey for a two-point conversion to give the Mustangs a 14-0 lead.
Bayshore responded midway through the fourth quarter, scoring a pair of touchdowns on Jackson’s 1-yard quarterback keeper and Dereck Williams’ 48-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 14-14.
In overtime, Lakewood’s A’Shawn Angel scored from 5 yards out and Hunter Cate drilled the extra point to give the Mustangs a 21-14 lead.
Bayshore picked up eight yards on its first play in overtime, but the Mustangs defense forced a pair of tackles for loss and an incompletion to seal the victory.
The Mustangs return to action Sept. 21 when they host Boca Ciega in their district opener.
