BLACKFISH SCREENING: Tonight we open the festival with Magnolia’s amazing documentary BLACKFISH at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Center. You must not miss this incredible experience. The red carpet begins at 6:00 PM and the film plays at 7:00 PM.

THROUGH WOMEN’S EYES 2013 The Gulf Coast Chapter of the U.S. National Committee for UN Women and the Sarasota Film Festival are partnering once again to present The 14th Annual Through Women’s Eyes Film Festival. This features independent films by women filmmakers that seek to expand awareness of the lives of women throughout the world. Attending guests will be on hand to lead post-film discussions following the screenings.

The Gulf Coast Chapter is part of the US National Committee for UN Women, one of 18 national committees worldwide working to create a world where women and girls live free from violence, poverty and inequality. The all-volunteer GCC presents Through Women’s Eyes and other events each year to help raise awareness and funds for UN Women, the women’s fund at the United Nations that supports women’s empowerment and gender equality programs in more than 100 developing nations throughout the world.

Incredible movies like TRAILBLAZERS IN HABITS, THE GREY AREA, LACE BITE, A GIRL AND A GUN, BRAVE MISS WORLD, MONSTERS, HOMEFRONT HEROINES and two amazing shorts packages await you this weekend. Original screenplays authored by students from Phoenix Academy (which sadly closes this summer) and Sarasota County Technical Institute are brought to life by performances from the Sarasota High School Drama Department.
