Children scouted for sea creatures, snorkeled, kayaked, field sampled, fished and boated Monday, July 29 to Friday Aug. 2, at Sea Sleuths Camp at Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium.

Fifth- through eighth-graders explored the relationships between marine life during the “Duos of Deep”-themed camp. Campers waded in Sarasota Bay with nets to examine the tiny critters and learned that marine life sea creatures depend on one another for survival.

CAMPER SPOTLIGHT
Kalie Devaney

What have you been doing this week?
We have been doing a lot of things. We have been studying fish. This morning, we did a study on plankton and what type they are and how you can classify them. We also went kayaking and saw manatees. We saw the bay; that was fun. We went snorkeling. We went on a boat and saw sand dollars and other fish. We also saw a bonnethead shark.

What was your favorite part of the camp?
My favorite part of the camp was seeing the manatees because one swam right under my kayak and I got a lot of good pictures, so it was pretty cool.

What has this camp been like?
I’d say it is really fun. It is a new experience. You learn a lot of cool things and you go out and do hands-on activities.

What have you have learned?
I learned about all sorts of fish that I never even heard of or have even seen.

By the Numbers
760 total campers during 10 weeks of summer camp

Four bonnethead sharks seen
