NewGate School did not start the school year off in the classroom today but, rather, on the water at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron.
NewGate has partnered with the Sarasota Youth Sailing Association to learn community- and team-building skills. Students sailed in teams of five on 22-foot and 24-foot sailing boats.
Twenty-seven seventh- to 12th-graders spent the day sailing, studying mangroves and working on tea-building skills with activities such as tug of war.
Science teacher Dr. Alina Kipchumba taught students about mangroves, and Sarasota Sailing Squadron instructors taught them nautical terminology in the classroom.
Students will spend Thursday and Friday there, as well, to build upon their sailing skills. They hope to make a field trip to the Sarasota Sailing Squadron at least once a month to continue working on their skills.
