LAKEWOOD RANCH — The University of Akron stuck with Anthony Lauro.

And Anthony Lauro stuck with the University of Akron.

On Feb. 6, the Manatee High running back and wide receiver signed a national letter of intent to play football for the Zips.

Lauro tore his anterior cruciate ligament Sept. 28, in the Hurricanes’ 52-13 win over rival Southeast. Lauro underwent season-ending surgery 10 days later.

After his surgery, Lauro, who also had an offer from Air Force, verbally committed to Akron. He honored his commitment on National Signing Day.

“I liked Akron because they stuck with me through my ACL injury,” Lauro says. “The coaches are great. I have a lot of family there, and I believe I’ll be able to play my four years there.”

Lauro has spent the past four months undergoing rehabilitation and is eager for the opportunity to continue playing at the next level.

“I’m most looking forward to the ability to compete at a high level and hopefully start a professional career from it,” says Lauro, who is interested in studying something related to science or the medical field.
