+ Braden River girls set new school records
The Braden River High girls basketball team went 2-1 this week, setting new school records for the lowest number of points allowed in a game and steals in a game.

On Jan. 17, Braden River beat Manatee 62-39 in district action. Erica Glisson and Kelly Logan both scored 12 points. Alexis Stout notched 11 points and a school-record 12 steals to lead the way for the Lady Pirates. Madison Jaco and Cheyenne Ogline each added 10 points.

Braden River followed up its win with a 43-8 victory over Bayshore Jan. 18. Logan finished with 14 points to pace the Lady Pirates. Glisson added 11 points.

+ Braden River prepares for sandbox tourney
The Braden River High Key Club will hold its second Sandbox Volleyball Tournament from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 16, at Bee Ridge Park, 4430 S. Lockwood Ridge Road, Sarasota.

Proceeds from the double elimination tournament will benefit the Eliminate Project, which was created through Kiwanis International and UNICEF to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus.

The event raised more than $1,000 for the project last year and the club is hoping to double its total this year.
Registration is $60 and includes a tournament T-shirt. The winning team will receive a grand prize, including cash, food coupons and gift certificates.

All proceeds will benefit the Eliminate Project.

+ Pirates to host 5K run/walk
The Braden River High track and field team will host its first Pirate 5K Run/Walk Jog-a-thon Feb. 23, at the school, 6545 53rd Ave. E., Bradenton.

The 5K will begin at 8 a.m. Registration is $20 before Feb. 15, or $30 the day of the event.

The first 200 participants to finish will receive a free T-shirt. Prizes will be awarded to the top five finishers and all participants will receive a ribbon.

+ Cardinal Mooney Cougars tame ODA Thunder
The Cardinal Mooney High boys soccer team defeated The Out-of-Door Academy 4-1 Jan. 17, in the regular season finale for both teams.

Senior Greg Illig scored a hat trick to lead the way for the Cougars. Blake Young scored Cardinal Mooney’s other goal. Goalkeeper Michael Staikos had 10 saves.
Tom Young scored the lone goal for the Thunder.

+ ODA boys soccer beats Dunbar
The Out-of-Door Academy boys soccer team defeated Dunbar 3-2 Jan. 15.

Brandon Place, Tait Lystad and Hunter Clarke all scored goals for the Thunder. Bryan Kirshe had 12 saves.

+ Spring adult softball league upcoming
The Manatee County Parks and Recreation Department recently announced the formation of the 2013 Spring Adult Softball League.

The spring season will begin Feb. 4. The Open League will plays 14 regular season games Monday through Thursday while the Co-ed League will play 10 regular season games on Sunday evenings.

Registration will be held through Jan. 27. Team registration fee is $400 for open league and $350 for co-ed league. All teams are required to pay a $20 association fee.

+ Local racer posts fourth-place finish
Eight-year-old East County racer Conner Dutting-Morrell finished fourth at the 10th Little 500, last month at the New Smyrna Quarter Midget Race Track.

Racers had to qualify before racing a heat race. The two point totals were then added together to determine each racer’s starting position.

Conner’s 10-year-old teammate Danny Sams finished third in the LT World Formula race and fourth in LT 160.

+ Sarasota crowns new No. 1 singles player
Hugo Armando was named Sarasota’s No. 1 singles player after defeating Ty Braswell, Jan. 13, in the Totally Tennis Exhibition Series.

Armando defeated Braswell 7-6, 6-7, 10-6 in front of a capacity crowd of 140 fans.

Armando will return to action April 7, against Attila Savolt, a new area resident and former ATP No. 60 in the world player, or future ATP star Jordan Cox.

The next event in the Exhibition Series will be held Feb. 10, at Payne Park Tennis Center. Local tennis directors Nate Griffin and Travis Eckert will face Dave Siddons and Adam Zastempowski. Contact Bob Luxembourg, 371-0162.
