+ Cardinal Mooney girls fall in district title game
The top-seeded Cardinal Mooney High girls soccer team fell 4-2 to Bishop Verot in the Class 2A-District 11 championship Jan. 18.
Anna Brusco and Rose Amato each scored one goal for the Lady Cougars.
As the district runner-up, Cardinal Mooney traveled to Benjamin High in West Palm Beach for a regional quarterfinal match Jan. 23. The winner will play the winner of the other regional quarterfinal between Bishop Verot and Cardinal Newman.
+ Mooney Cougars improve record to 19-1
The Cardinal Mooney High boys basketball team improved to 19-1 with a 75-60 victory over Boca Ciega in the Wally Keller Classic Jan. 19.
Antonio Blakeney paced the Cougars with 27 points and nine rebounds. Parker DelMedico added 11 points.
+ Riverview Rams top Booker Tornadoes
The Riverview High boys basketball team defeated Booker 60-48 in the annual Martin Luther King game Jan. 21.
Austin Walker paced the Rams with 15 points and eight rebounds. Nick Havener added eight points, 17 rebounds, seven blocks and five assists.
Terrance Bradley scored 14 points and Blake Harper added 10 points to lead the way for the Tornadoes.
+ Sarasota crowns new No. 1 singles player
Hugo Armando was named Sarasota’s No. 1 singles player after defeating Ty Braswell Jan. 13 in the Totally Tennis Exhibition Series.
Armando defeated Braswell 7-6, 6-7, 10-6 in front of a capacity crowd of 140 fans.
+ Cardinal Mooney tames ODA Thunder
The Cardinal Mooney High boys soccer team defeated The Out-of-Door Academy 4-1 Jan. 17 in the regular season finale for both teams.
Senior Greg Illig scored a hat trick to lead the way for the Cougars. Blake Young scored Cardinal Mooney’s other goal. Goalkeeper Michael Staikos had 10 saves.
Tom Young scored the lone goal for the Thunder.
+ Lady Blazers shoot past rival Lady Panthers
The Sarasota Christian girls basketball team defeated rival Bradenton Christian 54-42 Jan. 18.
Heidi Miller scored 17 points and Nicole Wittmer added 14 points to lead the way for the Lady Blazers.
+ SMA wrestler posts fifth-place finish
Sarasota Military Academy wrestler Connor Steinfeld finished fifth in the 126-pound weight class of the Ippolito Tournament Jan. 18 to Jan. 19, at Brandon High.
The top five wrestlers in each weight class received medals.
+ ODA boys soccer beats Dunbar 3-2
The Out-of-Door Academy boys soccer team defeated Dunbar 3-2 Jan. 15.
Brandon Place, Tait Lystad and Hunter Clarke all scored goals for the Thunder. Bryan Kirshe had 12 saves.
