The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens will once again host a Tropical 4th of July celebration this Thursday evening. Independence Day is one of my favorite holidays---everyone is always in good spirits and it nicely breaks up the summer doldrums. But getting a good spot for the fireworks is always a challenge. Instead of braving the crowds downtown, why not enjoy the big event with friends, family and nature-lovers in one of the country's most treasured gardens?
Head over to the Selby Gardens for some island flair with reggae music by Impulse and catering by Local Coffee + Tea available for purchase. Then grab a spot for a spectacular view of the fireworks as they drop over our gorgeous bayfront skyline. This is billed as a family-friendly event, so we can expect art projects, lots of dancing and a convivial atmosphere for all ages. There will be nature-based patriotic crafts with Jeannie Perales in the Kids' Corner; lawn games by Carolyn Rule; face painting by Karen Bell; and McClain's old-fashioned ice cream truck. Or you can wander the 14 acres of the world-famous gardens at your leisure.
Although you can no longer purchase tickets on line for the Tropical 4th celebration, you can buy them at the door of the Welcome Center on the night of the event when the gates open at 6 p.m. Attendance at Tropical 4th usually averages 1,000 people, so it is wise to get there early to assure you get a ticket for this great event! Bring folding chairs and lawn blankets, but please no coolers!
Tickets are $17 for members and $20 for non-members. Children 11 and under get in free. Call (941) 366-5731 for details, or visit selby.org to learn all about the Selby Gardens.
