+ In Michael’s Memory
Students and staff at Brookside Middle School observed Grey Matter Day Friday, May 24, a brain-cancer awareness event and memorial service for former Sarasota County teacher Michael Stuart. Stuart died from brain cancer in January. He taught in the school district for 36 years. He was the creator of the Carefree Learner, a 41-foot floating classroom that Sarasota schools use for marine-science classes and middle-school field trips.

Two Sarasota students earned medals Saturday, May 18, in Dunedin, for their performance in the divisional fencing competition. The Dunedin Fencing Club hosted the daylong match that featured saber, epee and foil events. Sarasota Military Academy senior Marshall Evans earned a third-place medal in the foil event, and Pine View sophomore Nathan Schlesinger placed third in the epee event. John Luper, an SMA alumnus, placed first in the epee event and third in the saber event.
