"The King of the High Wire" and Sarasota’s very own hometown hero Nik Wallenda successfully crossed Niagra Falls last summer, and we’re all anxious to see our beloved daredevil cross the Grand Canyon — this time with no safety net. He will face winds up to 20 miles per hour 1,500 feet above Little Colorado River Gorge on a wire that’s 2-inches thick, while Sarasotans bite their nails in anticipation.

Since Arizona is a little out of the way, the Discovery Channel will present “Skywire Live,” a live viewing of Wallenda’s courageous walk at 8 p.m. this Sunday.

And to celebrate his walk, Mattison’s City Grille is hosting a community viewing of the Discovery Channel’s live feed on a jumbotron along with a street party from 7 to 11 p.m. Sunday, June 23. It’s a free event with many hands-on family activities and Sailor Circus performances. Mattison’s is offering VIP tickets for $125 per person, which benefit Circus Sarasota. Call 330-0440 for more information.
