It's an action-packed weekend on Longboat Key, with several events that benefit area organizations.
A rummage sale takes place Friday and Saturday at St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church, 4280 Gulf of Mexico Drive. Longboat Key residents have donated toys, clothes, jewelry, artwork, electronics, furniture linens and other household items. A $5 “early bird” sale starts at noon Friday, March 1, and runs until 4 p.m. The sale continues, with no entrance fee, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Money raised will go to Catholic schools in Sarasota, as well as area charities.
The Longboat Key Garden Club's Home and Garden Tour offers an inside look of a handful of the key's finest abodes. This year's tour runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 2. It includes four homes and one garden on mainland Longboat Key for a ticket price of $20. For $50, guests can visit the Steve Ellis home on Jewfish Key. Tickets may be purchased at the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce, 5570 Gulf of Mexico Drive, or by calling club president Madelyn Spoll at 383-4818. Proceeds provide scholarships and grant money to Florida students pursuing studies in environmental fields. For a preview of the tour, see the Home & Garden insert in this week's Longboat Observer, or click here.
The Sarasota Wildlife Art Festival comes to Ken Thompson Park on City Island 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 2 and Sunday, March 3. The event will include a juried art show featuring paintings, mixed media, fine crafts, jewelry, photography and sculptures, and a symposium with presentations by specialists on wildlife and environmental topics, including Kevin Carroll, designer of the prosthetic tail for Winter the dolphin, featured in the movie "Dolphin Tale."
Ticket price is $5 for adults and free for children 12 and younger. Admission to the festival entitles guests free entry to Save Our Seabirds and a $5 discount to Mote Marine Saturday and Sunday. Proceeds benefit Save Our Seabirds and the Rotary Club of Sarasota Foundation. For more information, see http://www.sarasotawildlifefest.com/.
