Athlete of the Week: Kimmy Comito

The Out-of-Door Academy sophomore Kimmy Comito scored a school record nine goals for the second-consecutive game to lead the Lady Thunder to an 11-8 victory over St. Stephen’s March 11.

The 15-year-old center midfielder followed up her performance with eight goals in two games against Cardinal Mooney Wednesday, March 13 and Tampa Berkeley Prep Thursday, March 14.
Comito has scored 32 goals in five games so far this season.

"I wasn’t keeping track. At the end of the game, my mom said I scored nine goals. I was shocked. It’s happening so fast, so it doesn’t seem like it’s that many.

We’re a new team, so I do try and act like a leader. I’m fairly experienced compared to some of the other girls on the team. I’ve been playing longer, so, when I get the ball, I always look for the goal. That’s my first thought.

It was spring season my eighth grade year, and I didn’t want to play a sport for ODA. My mom told me I had to, though. I had a little experience with lacrosse, so I thought, “Why not play?” That’s where it all happened.

I really like being a part of a team. I’ve been known this season for scoring a lot of goals, but I couldn’t do it without my team.

It kind of came naturally to me. It felt natural cradling a (lacrosse) stick. I started playing club, and I was fairly good at it. I started to like it.

Some people think I’m the favorite on the team because my mom is the coach. On the field, she’s not my mom. She’s my coach. If she tells me to do something, then I’m going to do it. When we’re in the car, I’ll tell her if I want her to be my coach or my mom. It’s two different situations. That’s how I look at it.

Being small can give you an advantage when you’re weaving through space. But defensively, if a girl’s 5-foot-9, then how much am I really going to be able to cover her at 5-foot-2 1/2?"
