The Backstage Blogger sets sail again with “Vocal Vixens”

A performer without a show is like a ship without a sail. The magnificent watercraft feels the wind, sees the winds,  even googles wind patterns, but is simply unable to catch it. So this master of the sea, yearning desperately to harness the currents of the air, is completely directionless, like … like … a performer without a show.

Fortunately, after several agonizing weeks of utter saillessness, I am back on course in a wonderful new direction.

Mark your star charts, sea-folk, for a concert on June 8 at The HuB. In “Vocal Vixens,” talented vocalist Lyn Purmort and I come to port! (I’ve always been really good with metaphors.)

The concept for the Vocal Vixens performance evokes a cabaret-like evening, celebrating songs made popular by some of the most sensational singers of all time---Billie Holiday, Sarah Brightman, Edith Piaf, Judy Garland, Natalie Cole, Julie Andrews and the like.

It’s really exceptional for me because, though I’ve performed in countless theatrical productions, this is truly the first time that I decide the program for myself!

It’s sort of a rite of passage for any singer to be able to put together her own set of songs in a cabaret program. And even though I grew up in a family where dinner parties typically were excuses for bringing an audience into the house, I have never held an audience’s ear in this type of format.

So in these next four weeks, I have a lot to do. I have to select and perfect my songs, rehearse my duets with Lyn and our in-between “shtick,” work closely with Bob Constantino, our music director and arranger, pick costumes, promote the show, sell tickets, write an awesome behind-the-scenes blog, and try not to get too intimidated to sing songs made famous by my idols!

Other than that, I am just thrilled to have my sail back!
