The Jacobite Pipe and Drum Band and its partners---the First Brass of Sarasota, the Patterson Foundation's "Legacy of Valor," the Church of the Palms and Cell Phones for Soldiers---are all collaborating on the 7th Annual Memorial Day Concert, to be presented May 26 at 3 p.m. in the Church of the Palms (3224 Bee Ridge Rd., Sarasota 34239). This spirited afternoon concert will honor veterans, inspire patriotism and embrace freedom, with music to entertain, stories to educate and cell phones to provide communication tools for soldiers to talk to their families while serving our country.
The show will include tunes from conflicts throughout U.S. history, Scottish songs and dances, and other pieces that highlight American heritage. There is so much great music from these eras it was difficult for the bandleaders to decide what to perform! After much deliberation, they've put together a program that is sure to both move and amuse throughout the afternoon.
Gary Reinstrom, founder of the Jacobites and First Brass, writes this about the Memorial Day Concert:
Memorial Day is the traditional start of summer, with its barbecues, beaches, and here in Sarasota, the annual Jacobite Memorial Day Show put on by the Church of the Palms' Music Ministry. The Church of the Palms' Music Ministry is under the direction of John Ferreira, who will be honored by the Jacobites for his dedication to the arts in Sarasota. John is responsible for hosting everyone from Itzhak Perlman to 12-year-old bagpipers. The First Brass and internationally-known vocalist Sharon Scott will join in this celebration of heroes.
The twist on this 7th annual show is "Cell Phones for Soldiers." Endorsed by the Patterson Foundation's "Legacy of Valor," the program collects cell phones and calling cards to distribute to our troops in the armed forces so they can call home free of charge. The First Brass started collecting phones in the beginning of May at local churches, businesses and organizations and will continue through 2013. The program of music on the May 26 show will include: "Armed Forces Medley," "Battle Hymn of the Republic," "Steam Train to Mallaig," "Scotland the Brave" and Van Halen's "Jump!"
You can purchase tickets at www.Jacobites.Eventbrite.com.
The cost is $20.00 for adults, $10.00 for students (18 and under) and $15.00 each for a group of six or more purchased together.
