Cops Corner: Longboat Key

May 9
Left high and dry
7:01 a.m. — 5900 block of GMD. Abandoned Boat. Police responded to the scene of an abandoned boat, but by the time they arrived, the owner was there. The man said he tried to dock his boat the night before to pick up his wife on shore but couldn’t move it because tides were too high.

Get a move on
8:36 a.m. — 700 block of Broadway. Parking. Police found a van parked in a right of way near a restaurant. The restaurant manager said the owner of the vehicle lives on Jewfish Key, and he allows him to park on the property. The owner agreed to move the van.

Not so fast
7:37 p.m. — Gulf of Mexico Drive and Bay Isles Parkway. Reckless Driving. Police pulled over the driver of a red convertible and told him two callers had reported he was driving recklessly. He admitted to passing a vehicle that was going 35 mph in a 45 mph area and veering around a pedestrian crossing a crosswalk slowly. The man said he always drives carefully on the Key and said sometimes people see his bright-red car and thinks he’s traveling faster than he really is.

All the trimmings
9:18 a.m. — 1600 block of GMD. Disturbance. The property manager of the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort said a tree company working at the Aquarius Club was dumping trimmings on the property. The Aquarius Club manager said the pieces must have fallen during the trimming. A company representative agreed to remove the trimmings.

May 11
No license
12:19 a.m. — 5700 block of GMD. Reckless Driving. Police stopped a vehicle that was reportedly driving recklessly. The driver admitted to drinking two beers but didn’t appear intoxicated and told police, “Don’t have one,” when asked for his driver’s license. Police confiscated two cold beers and two knives from the vehicle and arrested the man for driving without a license.

On-the-job joker
3:26 p.m. — 2600-2800 blocks of Harbourside Drive. Disturbance. A man called police to accuse a marina dockhand of harassing his workers as they built a boatlift. Before police arrived, the dockhand allegedly said to him, “Supervisor, supervisor, supervisor,” and told him to get to work while shoving his shoulder. The man admitted to speaking jokingly to workers earlier and touching the man’s shoulder because he was ill. Police told the dockhand not to talk to the workers.

Pool rules
2:22 p.m. — 400 block of L’Ambiance Drive. Disturbance. A man’s grandson began crying and screaming while celebrating Mother’s Day in a condominium swimming pool. The grandfather called police after another man told him to shut his kids up. The other man told police the grandson began screaming because his grandfather wouldn’t let him exit the pool. He showed police a condo association rule stating that screaming children aren’t allowed in the pool.

Free press
12:27 p.m. — 5600 block of GMD. Suspicious Circumstance. A woman reported that another woman took all copies of the Longboat Observer and an obscure Longboat Key publication from the racks. She felt the culprit was trying to suppress the news. Police told her that because the papers are free, no crime had been committed.
