Air force honor
The Sarasota-Manatee Chapter of the Air Force Association recognized two JROTC teams from Riverview High School April 13, at the Sarasota County Military Ball for their performance in Cyber Patriot V. The association presented the school’s senior JROTC Instructor Sgt. Maj. Roger Mitchell with a certificate of recognition, and congratulated the cadets in front of their peers. In their first year of competition, the teams placed second and sixth out of a field of 86 “All Service Division” teams in Florida.

Baseball blast
Tampa Bay Rays player Ben Zobrist and his wife, Julianna, visited Sarasota Christian School students Monday, May 13, to share their story with kindergartners through 12th-graders. Zobrist discussed his transition from the minor leagues to the major leagues and the role his faith plays in his life. Julianna Zobrist sang songs from her current album, “Say It Now.” She also sang “Happy Birthday” to 16-year-old student McKenzie Lantz.

The Zobrists also signed autographs and met the varsity baseball team.


Prime principal
Sarasota County School District Superintendent Lori White announced Tuesday, May 7 that she will recommend Chad A. Erickson, of Altoona, Wis., to succeed current Bay Haven School of Basics Plus Principal Betsy Asheim. Erickson has served since 2001 as principal of Sherman Elementary School in the Eau Claire School District, in Wisconsin. Sherman Elementary was named one of the six healthiest schools in America by Family Circle Magazine in 2009.

Asheim announced her retirement earlier this year after six years at Bay Haven, and plans to pursue other professional and personal opportunities.

Singing sailors
The Sarasota High School Singing Sailors chamber choirs competed in the Florida Vocal Association State Concert Performance Assessment April 25, at Florida Southern College, in Lakeland. The Chamber Girls Chorale group received the highest rating of “superior” in all categories in which it competed. The full SHS Chamber Choir received one “superior” and two “excellent” ratings.
