New College graduates largest class in its history

Nearly 200 students walked across the stage Friday, May 24 at the 47th New College of Florida Commencement. Students received their Bachelors in Arts and the college reached a milestone of 5,000 graduates since it’s founding in 1967. The first graduating class was compromised of just 47 students.

The class of 2013 was the first class to graduate under President Donal O’Shea. Instead of wearing the traditional caps and gowns students crossed the stage in suits, dresses and colorful costumes. The Hon. Charles E. Williams, Circuit Court Judge of the 12th Circuit of Florida challenged students to advance fairness and diversity. Students also heard from Professor of Biology Leo Demski and heard from Brittani “Brie” McLemore, who was selected by her peers to provide the school address. The New College New Cats jazz ensemble performed for the audience and classmates.
