Pine View School students dipped their knives into creamy WOWBUTTER and grape jelly Thursday, May 30, in a frantic race to beat the world record for amount of sandwiches made in an hour.
Approximately 600 students participated in the event, put on by the Interact Club. Students exceeded their goal of 5,000 sandwiches by making 5,721.
The previous world was 2,706 sandwiches, by Eckrich Bacon Lovers Deli Meats in NYC. Pine View will send their results to Guinness this week to get the official record recorded, which may take up to six weeks.
The Walmart Foundation was a sponsor and WOWBUTTER donated their soy butter to the school after students learned about the rise of peanut allergies in children. Students used 124 jars of WOWBUTTER, 300 pounds of jelly and 540 loaves of bread, which they ran out of by the end of the hour.
Pine View will donate the sandwiches to the Salvation Army in Sarasota and Venice, Harvest Tabernacle, Church of Palms food pantry and Resurrection House.
Sarasota County Sheriff Tom Knight; Jane Goodwin of the Sarasota County School Board; Director of Nutrition and Food Services for Sarasota County Schools Beverly Girard; Sarasota County Attorney Steve DeMarsh; Vice Chairman of the Board at Sarasota Military Academy Herb Jones; program director at Community Youth Development Yolanda Mancha; County Commissioner Christine Robinson; and Director of New Media Communications at Tidewell Hospice Julio Lucas served as witnesses and counted the sandwiches.
