Cops Corner: East County

The following information was gathered from incident and arrest reports obtained from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

Oct. 27
TWO-TIMED
10:46 a.m. — 1000 Tropical Drive. Vehicle Burglary. A deputy responded to two vehicle burglaries. Unknown person(s) entered the first vehicle through the front door, which is broken and does not lock. Once inside, the person(s) stole $3 in change. The second vehicle had its passenger-side windows rolled down. Once inside, the person(s) took a drawstring backpack with $371 cash inside it. Other items from the backpack were left inside the vehicle. The person(s) fled the scene.

ABANDONMENT ISSUES
7:19 p.m. — 27th Street E./36th Avenue E. Abandoned Autos. A deputy responded to a reckless driving call. Upon arrival, the deputy saw an abandoned vehicle stopped in the middle of an intersection. The deputy could not locate the driver of the vehicle. The vehicle was deemed a hazard and towed.

Oct. 29
SHOP ’TIL YOU’RE DROPPED
5:43 p.m. — 8300 block of Lockwood Ridge Road. False ID. A woman had already been told she was not welcome at a department store. She shopped there, anyway. A deputy responded to the store. The woman lied about her identity, but the deputy discovered her real name. She had a warrant out of Sarasota County and was arrested.

Oct. 29
LEFT BEHIND
8:12 p.m. — 100 block of Greyhawk Boulevard. Abandoned Autos. A vehicle was found parked outside the gate of a residential community and partially blocking the right-turn lane. The vehicle’s owner could not be located. Lighting was poor, and, because the vehicle was found at a time of heavy traffic, it was towed. The deputy attempted to contact the registered owner and even drove to the person’s address. The residence was empty, and the phone call was unsuccessful.

Oct. 30
NO PAIN, NO GAIN
2:23 a.m. — 600 block of 67th Street Circle E. Information Only. A deputy responded to a report of a person in pain and needing help. The person was said to be in a hotel room close to a highway. The deputy checked all area hotels and found no one in pain.

IDENTITY CRISIS
4:29 p.m. — 4500 block of Honore Avenue. Driving with No License. A deputy stopped a vehicle at Whitfield Avenue and Lockwood Ridge Road for having only one functioning brake light. The driver did not have a driver’s license. He did provide vehicle information and insurance. He was arrested.

SELECTIVE THIEVERY
6:15 p.m. — 2900 block of 53rd Avenue E. Theft. A department store staff member witnessed a woman select cosmetic items from a shelf and conceal them in her handbag. Items inside the handbag, which she kept in her cart, included a hairbrush and deodorant. She then paid for some of the items, but kept others in the handbag. She also didn’t pay for a bag of candy. She exited the store and was arrested. Stolen items were valued at $62.12.

Oct. 31
SHATTERED RELATIONSHIP
8:08 a.m. — 200 block of 66th Street E. Criminal Mischief. A woman noticed a window in her home was broken. She did not know how long it had been broken. The woman said she might have heard glass break the morning of Oct. 29, but she only looked inside the home for evidence. Nothing inside the home was missing or misplaced. The window has $50 worth of damage. The woman believes her ex-boyfriend broke the window because she saw him the morning of Oct. 29 with his hands bandaged.

HOT WHEELS
11:46 a.m. — 7800 block of 38th Court E. Property Found. A woman found a bike in her front yard. It’s a fairly new bike, black and pink with skulls printed on the seat. The sheriff’s office is attempting to find the owner.
